John Kendall

John KendallJohn Kendall, MD FACEP is a board certified emergency physician who is the Director of Emergency Ultrasound and the Ultrasound Fellowship at Denver Health Medical Center. His interest in ultrasound began during his residency at the University of Southern California and has continued at Denver Health Medical Center. Although he has significant experience and success in emergency ultrasound research, one of his main areas of interest is in emergency ultrasound education. He developed the ultrasound curriculum for the emergency medicine residencies at the University of Southern California and Denver Health Medical Center. He has been teaching ultrasound courses nationally and internationally for over 13 years. He co-authored the CD-ROM, “Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine and Trauma” as well as co-editing the textbook, “Practical Guide to Emergency Ultrasound”. Dr. Kendall has organized and taught in over 100 ultrasound courses and was the Chair of the ACEP Ultrasound Section in 2004. He continues to be active in ultrasound education, starting the Ultrasound Fellowship at Denver Health Medical Center in 2005.

Steve Hoffenberg

Stephen Hoffenberg, MD has practiced emergency medicine in Denver, Colorado since 1978 and has incorporated the use of emergency ultrasound into his group’s practice beginning in 1992. He is the president of CarePoint, PC (a democratic group of 120 emergency physicians practicing in Denver), a fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians and is the Chairperson-elect of ACEP’s Ultrasound Section. He has taught emergency ultrasound technique and practice-incorporation over the past 15 years and is the lead author of ACEP’s recently released white paper, “Emergency Ultrasound Coding and Reimbursement”, available on the ACEP website.

 

 

 

Brandon Backlund

Brandon BacklundBrandon Backlund, MD, FACEP, grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1994. He received his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 2000, having also completed the Clinical Research Training Program, a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, in 2004. He developed a strong interest in emergency applications of ultrasound technology during the years following residency, working in community practice in Hawaii, California, and Washington; following this interest, he came to Denver Health Medical Center in July 2007 for the fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound, which he completed in June 2008. He joined the Denver Health faculty in July 2008, and is currently a full-time attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His interests include ultrasound education and research, echocardiography, ocular ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. He has lectured on emergency ultrasound-related topics at local and national conferences, and has taught multiple courses in basic and advanced emergency ultrasound across the US.

 

 

Cliff Rice

Cliff Rice, MD graduated from the Denver Health Emergency medicine residency program where he served as chief resident in 2008. During residency, Cliff actively participated in ultrasound research and cultivated an interest in emergency ultrasound. Following residency, Cliff signed on for the ultrasound fellowship at Denver Health which he completed in June of 2009. His interests include ultrasound education, lower extremity compression ultrasonography for the detection of DVT, as well as soft tissue-musculoskeletal applications of bedside ultrasound. Cliff has participated in many ACEP sponsored CME courses in basic, advanced, and pediatric ultrasound. Currently, he is practicing emergency medicine with North Shore University Health System outside of Chicago, Illinois where he is involved in their ultrasound program development and resident education.

 

 

Brooks Laselle

Brooks LaselleBrooks Laselle, MD completed his emergency medicine training at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) where he served as a chief resident. It was during residency that his interest in ultrasound began, particularly regarding ultrasound guided nerve blocks. He found ultrasound integral to improving patient care during his deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2008. Subsequently, he completed the fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Denver Health in preparation for his role as Director of Emergency Ultrasound and Director of the U.S. Army Fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at MAMC. His current interest is educating medical students, residents and practicing physicians about the clinical applications of ultrasound in emergency medicine. He has helped teach numerous ACEP sponsored CME courses in basic and advanced ultrasound.

 

 

Cathy Erickson, MD

Cathy EricksonCathy Erickson, MD completed her residency at Denver Health Medical Center after moving from Portland, Oregon where she finished medical school at Oregon Health and Sciences University. During residency, she developed an interest in ultrasound and is currently practicing emergency medicine at Denver Health while completing the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship. Her interests include echocardiography, pulmonary ultrasound, as well as resident and medical student education. Outside of medicine, she enjoys skiing, biking, ultimate Frisbee, and traveling. 

 

 

Geoff Sanz

Geoff SanzGeoff Sanz, MD grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He did an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo before attending medical school at the University of Alberta. Geoff is an emergency medicine resident at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where his interest in bedside ultrasound was cultivated early on in training. He is spending his fourth year of residency at Denver Health Medical Center pursuing a fellowship in emergency department ultrasound. Geoff's interests outside emergency department ultrasound include medical education and public health. When not busy in the emergency department, Geoff enjoys spending time outdoors riding his bike, cross-country skiing or snowboarding.

 

 

Dr. Theoret

Dr. TheoretDr. Theoret was born and raised in Montreal, QC. He attended medical school at McGill University and is completing his emergency medicine residency at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton. He is currently pursuing fellowship training in emergency department ultrasound at the Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Theoret is the co-founder and Chief of Medical Affairs of Track and Trail Adventures, a company offering unique CME opportunities. When not busy travelling the world or heli-skiing, Dr. Theoret’s interests include emergency department bedside sonography, continuing medical education and critical care.
